St. John Paul II Catholic High School RenderingJOHNSTOWN, COLORADO — A new chapter in educational development is unfolding in Northern Colorado with the construction of the St. John Paul II Catholic High School. This landmark initiative marks the first Catholic high school to be established in the region since 1958, offering a unique blend of traditional values and modern educational practices.

The project, spearheaded by the school’s headmaster, Blaise Hockel, and supported by a team of seasoned professionals, is set to cater to the educational needs of 200-300 students in its initial phase. The new facility will feature over 53,000 square feet of academic space, including state-of-the-art science labs and creative maker spaces with the second floor reserved for near term expansion. Athletics have not been overlooked, with plans for a CHSAA regulation gymnasium and expansive outdoor athletic facilities. A striking feature of the campus will be a 7,300 square-foot chapel, reflecting the school’s commitment to Catholicism alongside academic growth.

"St. John Paul II High School is not merely an academic institution; it is a community initiative that has been eagerly anticipated by the Catholic community of northern Colorado for over five decades," said Headmaster Hockel. The school’s design emphasizes the integration of beautiful spaces that promote community interaction and personal development, creating a nurturing environment for both students and the surrounding community.

The project is taking shape on a 44.1-acre parcel purchased through Caliber Cos., a Scottsdale, Arizona-based real estate investor and developer. The site’s development plans are comprehensive, designed to be an integral part of the growing residential and commercial hub in Johnstown, Colorado.

Leading the master planning and architectural design is Denver-based Integration Design Group, known for its expertise in crafting spaces that inspire wonder, worship, learning, and formation. Since its inception in 2006, Integration Design Group has carved a niche in designing meaningful environments for religious institutions, schools, and community-based organizations. "Our approach to designing St. John Paul II High School is holistic, ensuring that every space is not only functional but also inspirational and connected with the particular mission and vision of the school, and its classical curriculum," noted Adam Hermanson from Integration Design Group.

Complementing the architectural work, Denver-based Fitzmartin Consulting  is managing the intricate balance of design, construction, budget, and schedule. Working closely with the school board and meeting weekly to ensure that donor participation meets or exceeds its foundational objectives. Site acquisition in April 2024 required enhanced coordination with surrounding developers, neighboring stakeholders, municipal bodies, brokers, and consultants. This herculean successful collaboration has paved the way for the next phase of the project to begin.

As construction is poised to begin in 2025, the anticipation among current and future students, parents, and community members is palpable. The school, which is already seeing considerable growth and enrollment is set to open its doors at the new location in the second half of 2026, ready to welcome a new generation of learners. This institution promises to be a beacon of comprehensive education and community development, poised to serve the needs of Northern Colorado for generations to come.

The establishment of St. John Paul II Catholic High School is a testament to the power of collaboration and vision in the face of modern educational demands, marking a significant milestone in the history of educational opportunity and visionary leadership in Northern Colorado.
