10th Anniversary NAIOP Fight Night Results and Highlights

Submitted by Brandon Kramer, Fight Night 2023 Co-Chair - November 2023

Eleven years ago, NAIOP Colorado Board Member Chris King of DPC Companies attended a unique NAIOP event in Phoenix, sparking the inspiration to bring the concept to Denver. The NAIOP Arizona Chapter had successfully hosted a black-tie boxing event for years, and Chris saw the potential for similar success in our city.  What began as an experiment to put the “fun” back into NAIOP events following the Great Recession, has since evolved into one of the standout events on Colorado’s commercial real estate industry calendar. A few years into its creation, NAIOP Colorado partnered with Denver Children’s Foundation (DCF, formerly Denver Active 20-30) to infuse a charitable aspect, and together, we have raised $300,000 for at-risk youth over the years.

Commenting on the success Fight Night 2023, DCF President Beau Jenkins, expressed gratitude, stating, “Thank you to NAIOP Colorado and its members and guests for an amazing 2023 Fight Night – and for an impactful partnership spanning over 10 years, generating over $250,000 to transform the lives of youth in our community. As always, Fight Night was a knockout!”

Our 10th Anniversary NAIOP Fight Night this past November at ReelWorks Denver, proved to be the biggest yet! Despite the looming recession, the event sold out, and we raised more money for charity than ever before. The Real Estate Ringers, or industry bouts, featured fair matchups that all went to decision. Recognizing the importance of our commercial real estate industry boxing talent, we have implemented measures to not only sustain their training but also ensure compliance with the boxing commission rules regarding weight and safety.

The combined efforts by boxing promoter Jim “Smitty” Smith of Poor Boys Boxing and countless individuals who serve as boxer support have excelled in communication and motivation, contributing significantly to the overall success of the event. We could not have predicted such a great outcome for Fight Night on every level.

While there cannot be two winners in every fight, in our eyes every boxer that steps into the ring on Fight Night is a champion. Their commitment and grit to dedicate three months of one’s life to training and stepping into the ring in front of their industry peers is commendable. NAIOP extends our heartfelt thanks to all fighters, past and present, for their contributions to both the event and the charity. Those amateur "Real Estate Ringer" bouts included: Laura Farrar of CBRE vs. Marybeth Austin with D.A. Davidson; Aaron Boyd of DPC Companies vs. Albie Sherman representing Westside Investment Partners; Michael Harpole of CBRE vs. Rycherd Lott from Gage Commercial Construction; and Connor Haney with Venture Architecture vs. Kevin Woolsey of Kaufman Hagan Commercial Real Estate.

The support of our sponsors, particularly title sponsors - CoStar Group, LoopNet, and Ten-X – have been instrumental in making this possible. We extend our sincere appreciation for their continued support, and we look forward to seeing them again next year!

Results and Highlights from NAIOP Fight Night 2022

Submitted by Brandon Kramer, Fight Night 2022 Co-Chair, Marcus & Millichap - On October 6th, NAIOP Colorado hosted its 9th Annual Fight Night presented by CoStar Group at ReelWorks in Denver. After a pause in 2020 for the pandemic, and a detour to the suburbs for 2021 due to lingering pandemic precautions, the 2022 event was our largest ever! With over 630 CRE professionals in attendance and 8 boxers from the industry, the night was electric! Through the efforts of our NAIOP volunteers and Denver Children’s Foundation (DCF) Board of Directors, almost $35,000 was raised through raffle ticket sales and direct donations for Colorado’s at-risk youth. Bringing the total raised for Denver Children’s Foundation to over $200,000 since NAIOP’s partnership began with them in 2013.

The event was not without its hiccups, however. The Fight Night committee recruited a great roster of Real Estate Ringers – those industry professionals which train and serve as the boxing talent on Fight Night. But during training we lost two boxers due to injury. Fortunately, replacement fighters were identified on short notice, but bouts had to be moved around due to weight differences, which put a lot of stress on our boxing talent. The fighters handled the situation like professionals and put on an incredible show! This year’s Real Estate Ringers included: Rob Roetzel of Roetzel PLLC; Aaron Norris with Vari; Adam Lowery of Dynamic National; Jayme Wilson of Hoff & Leigh; Max Marcum with Marcum Commercial Advisors; Brian Horan with Galloway; Matt Nora of Lee & Associates; and Ryan Marsh with Hines. On behalf of NAIOP, I cannot thank these boxers enough for their dedication and perseverance through training and the final competition night. View the action from NAIOP Fight Night 2022 via our the highlight reel on YouTube or view the below.

Enough about how great I thought the event was, I asked a few of those involved to give me their thoughts as well. NAIOP Colorado President and Senior Director of Flywheel Capital, “Hurricane” Ian Nichols said,” Thanks to CoStar Group and every one of the 630+ real estate professionals that came out to support Fight Night 2022, our industry boxers, and Denver Children’s Foundation.  I’d also like to thank Chris King, NAIOP Past President and President DPC Development for bringing the idea to Colorado in 2013.  It has been fun to see Fight Night rise out of the great recession to become one of NAIOP Colorado’s marquee events of the year.”

My fellow Fight Night Co-Chair and emcee, John “The Mouth” Huemoller, Vice President of First American Title said, “Fight Night was once again the best CRE event of the year. The attendance was highest yet and the energy was amazing. The Real Estate Ringers deserve all the credit for everything they put into this event.”

Our Real Estate Ringer consultant and former Fight Night Boxer Steve “Stone Cold” Scrivener, Director at PlattPointe Capital shared “It was incredible to watch those professionals step way out of their comfort zones, commit to intense training programs, and experience something so far out of their daily norms. Hopefully they all cherish this night for the rest of their lives.”

Our Title Sponsor, CoStar Group, was a new addition this year and one that we are super excited about. CoStar Group came out big for the event, bringing in a ton of hype and a ton of guests. Matt Bannister, Regional Sales Director at CoStar Group, said, “The CoStar Group was honored to sponsor NAIOP’s Fight Night in 2022. It is truly the premier commercial real estate event in Colorado every year. The evening was a coming together of who’s who in commercial real estate and it was so special to be a part of. Most importantly, we all were able to raise $35,000for Denver Children’s Foundation. Thank you all for your support and attendance and we look forward to NAIOP’s Fight Night 2023!”

I wanted to thank again all the NAIOP Fight Night sponsors for their continued support in making this the single best event on the CRE calendar. Another huge shoutout and thank you to the Real Estate Ringers for your dedication to the training and for their flexibility with all the changes. A special shoutout to “Stone Cold” Steve Scrivener and Troy “Prime Time” Peterson for their help recruiting and motivating our boxers.

I for one am already stoked for next year, as 2023 will mark our 10th Anniversary NAIOP Fight Night! If you thought this year was big, just wait till you see next year! Be sure to check out all the pictures from the NAIOP Fight Night 2022 event here
